Art, Magic and Capitalism

Carico Massimo, in collaboration with the Municipality of Livorno and the support of the Tuscany Region, presents Art, Magic and Capitalism, an autumn program of exhibitions, workshops, screenings and round tables dedicated to the relationship between art and capital.
In an era in which the global art market governs artistic practice and is proposed as the only reference, a multi-voiced analysis starts from the margins of a peripheral city (Livorno) that freely questions the status of art, involving guests from different parts of the world and open to all those interested in reflecting on the creative process beyond the logic imposed by neoliberal ideology.
The relationship between art and capital is a complex and stratified relationship and Art, Magic and Capitalism wants to address it starting from some questions, perhaps taken for granted, but which can help us analyze the current situation and imagine future circumstances.
The first appointment of Art Magic and Capitalism is dedicated to an exhibition by Salvator Rosa.
Salvator Rosa is a gallery run by artists that addresses the issue of the production of works and their sale in a horizontal and non-speculative way.
The works of the 11 artists on display were made over a year in the intimacy of an inaccessible place. By temporarily putting the idea of the public -a notion coming from the world of communication- into suspension, to focus on the process and time of creation.
Salvator Rosa was a painter of the seventeenth century from Naples. Among the first who refused to work under commission.
Salvator Rosa’s collective show will be the display platform of Art Magic and Capitalism, which itself contains an initial answer to the various questions posed, but is also a starting point for formulating other.
